Why We Created This Tour
We believe one of the best ways to connect with a culture is through its arts, especially when that art is still shaped by the people and traditions of the community it comes from.
That is why we created this experience around red clay pottery in San Marcos Tlapazola, where guests can spend time with the women continuing this multi-generational tradition and learn about the strength, skill, and history behind it. This is not just about seeing finished pottery. It is about understanding the people, process, and social change connected to the craft itself.
At the heart of this experience is the story of Macrina Mateo Martรญnez, whose work challenged long-standing gender norms in her village and helped transform red clay pottery through a women-led co-operative. Our goal is for guests to leave with a much deeper appreciation for the art, the community behind it, and the wider meaning pottery can carry in Oaxaca.

What Makes This Tour Different
Many visitors encounter pottery by seeing finished pieces in shops or markets. This experience goes much further by taking you into the village of San Marcos Tlapazola, where the tradition is still carried forward by women whose knowledge and techniques have been passed down through generations.
What makes this day especially meaningful is that it connects craft with a wider human story. Through Macrina Mateo Martรญnez and the co-operative she helped shape, guests gain insight not only into pottery itself, but into how one woman challenged inherited gender roles in her village and helped create new possibilities for other women in her community.
Because the experience is private, there is more room to ask questions, spend time with the people behind the work, and absorb the process at a more natural pace. Rather than rushing through a demonstration, the day gives you the chance to understand the clay, the labor involved, and the cultural and social importance behind what is being created.
What to Expect During the Day
Your day begins with pickup from your centrally located Oaxaca City hotel and a drive out toward San Marcos Tlapazola, a village known for its red clay pottery traditions. Along the way, your guide helps frame the day with context around Oaxacaโs artisan culture and why this village remains so important to the pottery story of the region.
Once there, you will spend time learning about Macrina Mateo Martรญnez, the villageโs pottery traditions, and how this women-led co-operative has changed both the local craft and the social expectations around who can shape its future. This is a chance to hear directly about the work, the challenges, and the legacy behind the pottery in a way that most visitors never experience.

The day also includes hands-on time with the pottery process itself, giving guests the chance to better understand the clay, the shaping methods, and the skill involved in turning raw material into something meaningful and beautiful. Even for travelers with no artistic background, this part of the experience tends to create a much stronger appreciation for the work behind every finished piece.

As the day unfolds, you will also enjoy a local meal before heading back toward Oaxaca City. This helps round out the experience in a more grounded way, tying together art, local life, and the human side of the village. If any pottery stands out and you would like to purchase directly from the producers, you are welcome to do so. Cash is best, and there is never any pressure to buy.

Why San Marcos Tlapazola Matters
San Marcos Tlapazola matters because it remains one of the villages where red clay pottery is still closely tied to community identity, inherited skill, and the work of local women who have carried the tradition forward.
That matters for guests because the day is not only about seeing finished pottery. It is about understanding how the material, the techniques, and the people behind the work all remain connected to the place itself. In this setting, pottery feels less like a product and more like part of the villageโs living cultural fabric.
Through Macrina Mateo Martรญnez and the co-operative story, guests also come away with a more specific understanding of how art and social change can intersect. The village itself becomes part of the experience, adding depth and meaning to everything you see and learn.

Is this tour right for me?
This pottery tour works especially well for travelers who want more than sightseeing and are curious about the stories, people, and traditions behind Oaxacaโs artisan culture.
It is a strong fit for art lovers, culturally curious travelers, photographers, creative travelers, and anyone interested in women-led community initiatives. Because the experience is private, it can also suit different travel styles and works well for those who prefer a more thoughtful pace.
You do not need pottery experience to enjoy the day. Some guests join because they already love artisan traditions, while others come because they want a more meaningful introduction to a side of Oaxaca that is easy to miss on a more standard outing. As long as you are open to learning and engaging respectfully, this experience tends to stay with people long after it ends.

This is an amazing tour. An opportunity both to learn about the deep cultural traditions of the community, witness a master potter at work and learn of Macrina’s extraordinary journey to create the coop and preserve her traditions and pottery craft for future generations. The food was also wonderful and our guide was fabulous. I cannot recommend this tour enough. You will come away both moved and having had a chance to experience the culture of the area in a way that is truly unique.
