Though the experience usually takes between 3 to 5 hours from pickup to drop-off, we suggest planning it for a day when you have nothing else scheduled, as timing may shift slightly and you may feel tired after your tattoo.
After your reservation is confirmed, within a few minutes you will receive a welcome email asking for a few extra details, such as your pickup location and passport details. If you do not see it, please check your junk mail folder and reply as soon as you can.

Please note: This experience includes up to a medium size, medium detailed Sak Yant. If you would like larger or more detailed yantras, please let us know in your customer notes when making your booking. They come at an extra local cost depending on size and detail, payable directly to the ajarn.
Please also note: Songkran Festival is a holiday in Thailand, and Sak Yant will not be available during this time (April 13-16). This is another opportunity to consider getting a Sak Yant on another date or in another city before or after your visit to Bangkok.
Getting a Sak Yant in Bangkok with Ajarn Ya
Who is Ajarn Ya?
Still in his thirties, Ajarn Ya has quickly established himself as a dynamic practitioner of Sak Yant in Bangkok. His journey in this sacred art began in 2018, and from the beginning, he built his path through the teachings of numerous masters rather than only a single source.
Among the ajarns who helped shape him are Ajarn Thoy Dabot, Ajarn Chai Ladkrabang from Bangkok, Ajarn Hanbunlerd, and others. That wide base of training gave him a strong foundation of inspiration, knowledge, and practical guidance.
Ajarn Ya represents a younger generation of Sak Yant masters who still work with strong respect for tradition while also bringing a flexible, client-aware approach to the experience.
A blend of tradition and modernity marks the way Ajarn Ya works. For cleaning his khem sak, or metal rod, he follows a careful process involving an alcohol wash, a disinfectant soak, and heat treatment. For needle tips, he takes a modern route and uses disposable needles to help guarantee a very high level of safety and cleanliness.
The ink used in his Sak Yant practice is of exceptional quality and imported from the USA. This ready-made ink is specifically formulated for tattooing, helping create vibrant and lasting designs.
Ajarn Ya’s Sak Yant work has also taken him to countries such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. Outside of his professional life, he is a devoted family man who cherishes time with his daughter and also enjoys creating treasury amulets.
He is especially known for his adaptability. Ajarn Ya skillfully redesigns and modifies Sak Yant layouts to better align with the personal desires and spiritual needs of each guest, making the experience feel more tailored and more responsive to the individual.

Why We Created This Experience
We created this experience to help honor one of Thailand’s most sacred ancestral practices, while also creating a respectful space for guests who are seeking perspective, meaning, or grounding during important chapters of their lives. Many people come to Sak Yant while moving through trauma, hardship, personal obstacles, or major transitions. We understand those troubled waters more than most, because WSE was born in similar ones, and we have become very experienced at helping guests feel supported as they step into something deeply personal.
For us, that means protecting the integrity of the process. Sak Yant should not be reduced to a tattoo shop appointment or a co-op setting that strips away the values, atmosphere, and traditions that make it special. It should be received in the ajarn’s own sacred space, where respect is shown to the master, his lineage, his years of training, his knowledge, his wisdom, and the traditional setting in which this practice is meant to be given. That is how it has long been received by Thai people, and that is the spirit we believe should be preserved.
That respect also extends to the value of the ajarn’s work. We do not try to pressure ajarns into charging less simply because someone is a foreign guest, or push unnecessary volume through them. We honor the rates they set for their time, skill, experience, and self-worth. We also take great care in choosing who we work with. After vetting many ajarns around the country, we narrowed our partnerships down to those who meet the standards we care most about and that our guests care most about too: hygiene, quality, and traditions. Ajarn Ya is one of the Bangkok ajarns who meets those standards.
What comes from all of that is an experience that is carefully facilitated, fully translated, and grounded in real respect. We do not promise spirituality, because that comes from within each guest. What we do offer is something sacred and ancestral, shared in the traditional and authentic way it is intended to be given, with the support, context, and care that help guests feel safe enough to be fully present for it.
What Makes This Experience Different
Many visitors think getting a Sak Yant means turning up at a famous temple or co-op, waiting through crowds, and accepting a rushed process with little explanation. We built this experience around something much more personal and much more careful than that.
We do not take people into busy environments where consultations are limited, quality can feel rushed, translation is minimal, or hygiene standards may not match what guests expect. Instead, you visit a carefully vetted ajarn in a more intimate setting, with a licensed guide who helps you communicate clearly from start to finish.
The consultation is the heart of the day. Rather than choosing a tattoo only by appearance, you have the chance to talk through your goals, fears, values, and current challenges so Ajarn Ya can suggest something more personal and more appropriate for you. He is especially good at reworking layouts and adapting designs when a guest needs something slightly different from the standard format.
What to Expect During the Day
On the day of your Sak Yant ceremony, your guide will meet you at your hotel or at an agreed meeting point in Bangkok. From there, you travel together toward the quieter area where Ajarn Ya’s samnak is located.
During the journey, your guide helps introduce the process, explains more about how Sak Yant fits into Thai life today, and begins answering the questions many guests already have before they even arrive.
Once you reach the samnak, the setting itself begins to shape the day. This is not a tourist tattoo shop. It is a working traditional space, often with locals there as well, and the atmosphere helps you understand how seriously Ajarn Ya takes his work and the old customs around it. The smells, the sounds, the statues, the masks, and the incense all help shape the experience into something much more memorable than a simple appointment.
With your guide translating throughout, you will sit down with Ajarn Ya for your consultation. This is where you talk about the parts of your life that matter most to you, including goals, fears, values, and challenges, so he can recommend a yant that fits you more personally. If you already have a design in mind, you may absolutely discuss it with him as well.
Once the consultation is complete and the design and placement are agreed upon, the Sak Yant begins. Traditional rituals are observed before and after, and the tattoo itself may take anywhere from a short session to much longer, depending on the size, complexity, and location chosen.
After your Sak Yant has been completed and blessed, your guide brings you for a simple local meal, often in a local food market, so you can recharge, reflect on the experience, and ask any remaining questions you still have about what you just went through.
When the meal is finished, we arrange transport back to your hotel so you can rest, process the day, and settle into your onward journey with your new Sak Yant.
How choosing a Sak Yant really works
We generally discourage guests from choosing a yantra before visiting an ajarn. The reason is simple: the definitions you find online are often vague, inaccurate, or based on someone else’s reasons for getting that design.
During your consultation, you can tell Ajarn Ya about what is important to you in life, what you want to work on, and what challenges you are currently facing. Based on your intentions, he can suggest a yant that is more personal to you rather than just visually familiar.
You absolutely have the right to request a design for yourself, but traditionally, Thai people trust that the ajarn is choosing something that suits them based on what they share with him. The deeper and more honest the conversation, the more personal the outcome tends to feel.
The characters around a yant are not ordinary sentences. They are combinations of old and new scripts written in code, with each character representing a kata. Only trained ajarns can read them properly, and often only within their own lineage.
What Sak Yant size is included?
Our experience includes a Sak Yant up to the same size and detail level as the popular Haw Taew (5 lines) design. There are thousands of designs within that size and detail level. Your ajarn can always find a unique yantra design that embodies your intentions, within the included size and detail level.
Important: All Sak Yant must be above the waist, with no exceptions. This is due to sexual associations with Sak Yant below the waist, which the ajarns are not comfortable giving.

Getting a larger or more detailed Sak Yant is more of a personal aesthetic choice (as there are designs for every need/value/goal in all sizes, so there are no limitations to the included size for meeting your potential enchantments. Here are some of the potential costs for increasing Sak Yant with your ajarn (these are some of the commonly requested designs, of course, with over 10,000 possibilities, we can’t list them all):

All tours, services, and experiences booked through WSE Travel are bound to our Terms and Conditions, which were modeled after most other travel services such as flights, hotels, and other tour operators.
At Where Sidewalks End, your reservation is more than a transaction — it’s a direct contract with local professionals who rely on this work as a primary source of income. As such, we are obligated to honor the livelihoods of our local partners — including guides, Ajarns (masters), and drivers — who dedicate their time exclusively to your experience.
In many of the destinations where we operate, labor protections and fair wage commitments are upheld by local laws — and we are both ethically and contractually required to adhere to them. Once a booking is confirmed, the service providers committed to your experience are financially compensated for reserving their time — even in the event of cancellation. This ensures fair and dignified treatment for all involved in delivering your experience.

More than 14 Days’ Notice
Your payment will be placed into a Lifetime Deposit (Safety Deposit Box). This can be:

Refunds are not available, unless WSE Travel cancels your booking due to reasons beyond your control.
7–14 Days’ Notice
A 50% rebooking fee will apply. This helps offset the compensation obligations to your dedicated team of local guides and service providers, who have reserved their day exclusively for your private tour and may not be able to secure alternate work with us or others on short notice.
Less than 7 Days’ Notice
The full cost of the tour is retained. As this is a private experience, your local team’s time is fully dedicated to your session. A new team will be hired for any future rebooking.

I loved every minute of being in Bangkok, but I will have to say that getting my Sak Yant tattoo was probably the best experience of the whole trip. I booked a session for my father, Jim, and myself. My dad is in his seventies and had never been tattooed before, so this was a very unique and awesome experience for him, and for me it is a memory I will always cherish.
Arjan Ya is very kind and professional–and extremely quick! I requested a twin tigers Sak Yant on my back and it only took him about an hour to complete it. My dad received a three lines Sak Yant and I think the whole process only took Arjan Ya maybe twenty minutes. Both Sak Yant tattoos are gorgeous and my dad and I are extremely happy with them.
I will also add that the space Arjan Ya works in is clean, and the needles he uses are brand new for each client. This is not standard practice if you want to get a Sak Yant at a temple; needles are typically reused.
Arjan Ya will not only create a Sak Yant on you that is spiritual in design and method but he will also do so in an environment that is clean, which was extremely important to me because of my dad. I did not want my father to end up getting sick from getting a tattoo and then some kind of awful infection because of a dirty needle or unsanitary environment. Rest assured that the environment is safe and sanitary.
Finally, the local neighborhood has great food if you’re feeling hungry after getting your tattoo finished. There are also several pet kitties that live around the shop if you’re partial to animals; I loved seeing them as I headed in to the shop.

The inking itself took just 20 minutes, though it felt longer under the sting of the needle. I’m someone more familiar with emotional pain than physical, and this reminded me: anything meaningful demands a price. In this case, a bit of pain was the price of transformation.
Did I walk away feeling like a new man? Not instantly. But I know that transformation isn’t always immediate. As I continue to honor the Sak Yant, and Ajarn Ya’s blessing, I believe the change will unfold over time, as it’s meant to, I believe.

This was the most magical experience! Although our guide Khun Nong was extremely personable and sweet, there was still quite a bit of a language barrier. We chatted a bit on the ride, and he is extremely knowledgeable about Thailand but I was under the impression we would speak more about my values and the “why” for my tattoo. He asked me what my values were as we were walking into see Ajarn Ya. He didn’t really explain it to me either except for telling me that the first line was the alphabet, so now when people ask me what it means I say a blessing for my family. There was no looking through yantras or other sak yants in his book, no explaining what things meant or any of that from the guide and at one point I was communication with Ajarn Ya, and I think he told the guide to stop looking thru the books and pay attention to us as we were discussing placement lol. Aside from that I loved every second of this experience! Ajarn Ya showed me the packaged needle before he opened it to make sure that I knew it was new and I told him that was one of the reasons I picked him. He was so welcoming and accommodating, always making sure I was comfortable. He had a premade stencil that he first put on the inside of my arm but then showed me how it would change and not be straight when I moved my arm so we agreed the back of my arm was better. He was very patient with me while I was deciding placement and showing me how it would change when arm moving etc. which I appreciated. I will say that this method may have hurt a little bit more than machine tattooing, but it was very similar in the aspect of it wasn’t a constant pain, just at various times it made me wince. He placed the stencil outline on my arm and then completely freehanded the letters and designs. He definitely is a master! I was very impressed. He blessed the tattoo and me, then gave me a bracelet and another blessing and even included my friend who came along for support in the experience by giving her a bracelet and blessing it as well. I am SO thankful for WSE for vetting and sharing the information you need before getting your sak yant, I wouldn’t have done it without the guidance! This was such an amazing experience and I was shaking afterward because I was so happy and feeling blessed. He allowed us to film, and take pictures with him. If I go back to Bangkok and get another sak yant, I wouldn’t even consider going to anyone else. The money and tips he receives, he gives it back to the kids of his community.
When it was finished, our guide asked if we wanted to go downtown or back to the hotel and we said hotel. There wasn’t a meal with him as stated in my itinerary, but that may have been partly lost in translation when he was asking us about downtown. Overall though, I didn’t mind not having a meal because the entire experience was already beyond my expectations!

Very happy with my first Sak Yant tattoo, thanks to WSE, Ajarn Ya, and Khun Nong (Jess). The pre-process was very thorough and planned, easing my nerves a lot. My guide arrived early and was very nice, offering snacks and juice as we rode to the studio location. It was super helpful to have her there to explain the process, as sorting through the various designs based on my personal story and mantras took a little time. However, we all worked together on finding the perfect design, and came up with five very meaningful mantras that were infused into the Yant design, and the final product is beautiful. My tattoo was placed on my right shoulder blade, and the inking process took only about 30 minutes. After the tattoo, there was a blessing and I took notes about the tattoo and other things that were in the room that I was curious about. Ajarn Ya was very patient with my many questions about the items in the room. For lunch, we had soup at a small place in the neighborhood within walking distance from the Ajarn’s studio. I’m so glad I did this, as I was a little hesitant at first not being Buddhist and wondering if I should or shouldn’t do it, but now I feel like it enhances my spirituality and believe that it will be a reminder to me to live my purpose and stay true to the mantras I chose. Many thanks to the WSE team for making this such a seamless process. I would certainly consider getting another one someday! My tattoo did not bleed at all, and is healing quickly, only with some itchiness. I had no issues on my multiple flights totalling 18 hours home, or carrying a heavy backpack.

I had a really great time getting the Sak Yant. The guide khun Koi was super punctual and very sweet. She told me a lot about Sak Yants, and was like a tour guide as we drove through the city, explaining certain buildings and giving historic and present day facts. She could answer all of the questions I had, even the ones not about the Tattoo, but about specific things from Thai culture and was all around a very pleasant person. She made me feel very well prepared and was a comforting presence during the (very painful, partly because I chose my spine as placement) tattooing process. Ajarn Ya was very nice too and did a great job with the tattoo. I was glad khun Koi was there to translate though. If not for the pain while getting tattooed, I would immediately do it again. Afterwards it immediately stopped hurting too. The tattoo seems to be healing very well even though I had to sit through my flight the next day. I feel very blessed to have had this experience and hope the Sak yant will bring me luck.
The communication with the WSE team was also very smooth, as they would answer very quickly and were very helpful.
