Why We Created This Tour
We believe one of the best ways to connect with a place is through its history, especially when that history can still be experienced through landscapes, rock art, archaeology, and the communities that continue carrying memory forward today.
That is why we created this experience around the prehistoric caves of Mitla and the wider cultural landscape of Oaxaca’s Central Valleys. This is not only a scenic outing. It is a way to step into a region where traces of very early life, plant domestication, ritual meaning, and long cultural continuity can still be felt in a tangible way.
Our goal is for you to leave with more than photos of dramatic caves and ancient sites. We want you to come away with a stronger understanding of why this region matters, how deep its human story runs, and how local Zapotec perspectives still give meaning to these places today.
What Makes This Tour Different
Many visitors pass through Oaxaca focused mainly on food, mezcal, or colorful artisan villages. This experience goes in a different direction by grounding the day in prehistoric evidence, archaeological remains, and the deep time layers that shaped the region long before the present city existed.
The caves themselves make this experience especially meaningful. Their importance is not only visual. They are part of a landscape recognized for preserving evidence tied to very early plant domestication and long human presence in the valley. That gives the visit a much wider frame than a simple cave walk.
Because the day is private, there is more room to move at your own pace, ask questions, and absorb the historical and cultural context without feeling rushed. The combination of caves, archaeology, local food, and living cultural perspective gives the experience a depth that is difficult to find in a more standard day trip.
What to Expect During the Day
Your day begins with pickup from your Oaxaca City hotel and a drive into the Central Valleys, where the wider landscape starts to frame the history you will be exploring. From the beginning, the focus is on moving beyond surface sightseeing and into places that help explain just how deep Oaxaca’s human story really is.
The first major stop is the prehistoric cave zone near Mitla, where your visit is guided with help from the Zapotec community. As you move through the caves, you will encounter rock paintings and learn about the significance of the site within both archaeological history and local cosmology. The caves are also closely associated with evidence of early plant domestication in the valley, which adds another layer of importance to the visit.
After the cave visit, the day shifts into a culinary pause with a traditional Oaxacan meal. This gives you time to slow down, reflect, and continue experiencing the region through another part of its cultural identity. The meal also includes the chance to try distinctive local moles, which adds another layer of place and memory to the day.
From there, the experience continues at the archaeological site of Dainzu, where another chapter of Oaxaca’s past comes into view. This stop helps widen the narrative beyond the caves alone and shows how different eras of cultural development continue to leave a visible mark on the region.
The final stop is El Tule, where you will visit the famous ancient tree and the church beside it. This part of the day brings the wider historical arc into focus in a different way, showing how continuity, change, colonization, and endurance can all be read in one place. It is a fitting close to an experience built around deep time and layered cultural history.
By the time you return to Oaxaca City, you will have experienced the region through prehistoric caves, ancient ruins, local food, and a living tree that has watched centuries pass. If this sounds like the kind of historical experience you are looking for, you can reserve your private tour using the booking section at the top of the page.
Why These Sites Matter
These sites matter because they help show Oaxaca not only as a vibrant present-day destination, but as a region shaped by very long human continuity, cultural adaptation, and environmental knowledge.
That matters for guests because the day is not only about visiting isolated attractions. It is about understanding how caves, archaeological remains, food traditions, and sacred landscapes connect into a wider story of place.
By moving through the Mitla cave zone, Dainzu, and El Tule in one day, guests come away with a more layered understanding of Oaxaca than they would get from a single-stop outing alone.
Is this tour right for me?
This experience works especially well for travelers who are curious about history, archaeology, early human landscapes, and the cultural depth behind the places they visit.
It is a strong fit for culturally curious travelers, history lovers, photographers, and guests who prefer meaningful context over quick sightseeing. Because the day is private, it also works well for travelers who want to move at a more personal pace and take time with the places that interest them most.
It is best suited to guests with a reasonable level of mobility and comfort on uneven terrain, since the cave section can be physically demanding in parts.

A wonderful day touring with Victor to the prehistoric Mitla caves and Dainzu. Victor and David, the guide who met us at the caves, both have a wealth of knowledge about the Mitla caves and Zapotec traditions and ceremonies, as well as the botany and geography of the area. The route to the caves is a bit challenging (at least for us older folks) and Victor gave me the choice between 2 routes and was helpful and supportive along the way. I recommend the easier route and using a hiking pole/stick if you are in the “senior” category, even if you are in moderately good physical shape, as I am.
Victor also shared a wealth of information about the Dainzu site, and the day included a fantastic traditional meal of moles in Tlacolula.
It was an unexpected bonus to connect with Victor about a shared interest in traditional indigenous spiritual healing and ceremonies, something I have participated in for close to 20 years and, as a relatively new full time resident in Oaxaca, to learn more about his life and life in this beautiful place!
I highly recommend this experience which is more than a tour!

Thank you, Victor, for your knowledge of the area, and your ability to adapt to the slower pace 3 people over 70 needed! When we reached the entrance to the trail to the caves, we were met by David, another guide authorized to accompany us to the caves. We were shown several plants, such as the copal tree, wild Agave, and others used in offerings or as medicine. Both Victor and David were able to point out what current interpretations of the pictographs are. It was stunning and difficult to absorb being in the presence of a place inhabited by our ancestors 10,000 years ago. Next was lunch in a tiny restaurant on a dirt road, run by Eva, who served us our best mole ever. Who also has her own YouTube channel, and teaches traditional cooking techniques internationally several times a year! You know it’s the best, when your guide buys frozen mole to take to his girlfriend in europe..Next, Dainzú, another archeological site of significance, yet we were the only ones there. Finally, a visit to Tule, to experience the 1,500 yr old cypress tree that has the largest diameter in the world. Victor let us take our time in each location, so it was a long and VERY satisfying day. Thank you, Victor, for a memorable day visiting the ancients.

This experience was an in-depth look into the area’s ancient history, highlighting the spectacular caves and cave art, the Dainzú archeological site, and some of the region’s best moles all in one day. Our guide Christian was a wealth of knowledge and answered all of our questions about the area and its rich traditions. We learned so much about the origins of corn, the early Zapotecs, and even current land use and vegetation. At the highest cave, we participated in a spiritual ceremony casting corn kernels as a letting go. This was particularly powerful for us. After the caves, we indulged in a tasting of 13 different moles before choosing up to 4 different mole options for our main meal, each paired with a choice of 4 different meats. We ate so much, we didn’t really need dinner! These were by far the best moles I’d ever had, and some of them were truly distinctive, like the rose and the caper. The tour concluded by visiting Dainzú, a smaller archeological site that was taken back by the local community and featured a ceremonial ball court and a yellow temple. A very meaningful and interesting way to end our time in Oaxaca. Highly recommend this tour for a more intimate excursion in the area.

We had a wonderful tour and would recommend this one highly. Christian was an excellent guide… very well informed, not just on the prehistoric caves but on the biology of the area, the modern history, the local cultures, the food, mezcal… we learned a ton! And lunch was one of the best ever in Oaxaca (and that’s saying something). The climb up to the caves is steep and not for those with mobility issues, but if you’re comfortable hiking it’s quite doable. The caves are one of the most significant archaeological sites in the western hemisphere, yet you’ll be practically the only ones there. The habitat preservation around the caves is admirable. One of the best tours we’ve taken. Highly recommended.

This whole experience was incredible! Christian was a phenomenal guide – knowledgeable, respectful, and so kind! We both, and our two teens learned a lot and had fun in the process!! Try the pink mole at Azul Adobe!!! The whole day was an unforgettable experience !!
