Why We Created This Experience

We created this experience for travelers who want to understand why marigolds matter so much during Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, not only admire them from afar. These flowers are tied to memory, seasonal labor, altar-making, and the symbolic pathways believed to guide loved ones back during Muertos.

We also wanted to create a day that lets guests experience the marigolds before they disappear into the altars and cemeteries of the city. Seeing them in the fields, at the height of their harvest, offers a very different perspective on their role in the season.

Our goal is for you to leave with more than beautiful images. We want you to come away with a stronger appreciation for the flower itself, the people who grow it, and the way marigolds help shape the visual and emotional world of Day of the Dead in Oaxaca.

What Makes This Experience Different

Many visitors see marigolds only after they have already been arranged on altars, in markets, or along cemetery paths. This experience is different because it brings you out to the fields themselves, while the flowers are still being harvested and celebrated.

The day also includes two distinct locations. The first is a quieter marigold-growing environment where the symbolism and farming side of the flower can be understood more clearly. The second has a more festive local energy, with food, music, and vendors celebrating the sacred flower harvest.

Adding a professional photographer also gives the experience a memorable visual layer, but the photos are not the whole point. They are there to help capture a day that is already meaningful in its own right.

What to Expect During the Day

This is a one-day experience taking place on October 28, 2026. We begin in Oaxaca City and head out into the countryside, where the marigold harvest and its Day of the Dead significance become much easier to understand in context.

The first stop is Cultivos El Viejo, where rows of marigolds stretch across the fields in full bloom. On the drive there, your host introduces the history and symbolism of cempasรบchil, helping explain why these flowers hold such an important place in Muertos altars and seasonal preparation.

Once at the fields, you have time to walk, observe, and take in the setting while learning more about marigold farming and the timing of the harvest. This first stop tends to feel calm and visually striking, with the flowers themselves taking center stage.

A professional photographer joins the day to capture portraits and candid moments in the marigolds. This is one of the reasons the experience feels so special, but it is important to set expectations clearly: the edited photos are not delivered immediately. The photographer processes thousands of Muertos photos each season, so the 3 to 4 week delivery timeline is accurate and should be expected from the start.

After that, the day continues to the Festival del Corte de la Flor de Gallo, where the atmosphere changes. This second location has more of a local festival feeling, with music, food stalls, vendors, and another type of flower traditionally used on Day of the Dead altars.

Here, you enjoy traditional local festival food and a non-alcoholic drink while taking in the community celebration around the sacred flower harvest. It is a lively contrast to the first field visit and helps show how these flowers are embedded not only in ritual, but also in seasonal community life.

By the end of the day, the aim is not simply that you have visited two flower sites. It is that you understand the marigold more deeply as a living part of Oaxacaโ€™s Muertos season and leave with images that reflect that connection.

Is this experience right for me?

This experience is best suited for travelers who want to connect with Day of the Dead through seasonal symbolism, local agricultural life, and visual beauty rather than through nightlife or heavier ritual settings alone.

It is a strong fit for guests who enjoy photography, flowers, rural day trips, and understanding how Oaxaca prepares for Muertos before the cityโ€™s altars and cemeteries are fully in motion.

It is less suited to travelers expecting immediate photo delivery or those looking only for a quick stop. Patience and appreciation for the slower rhythm of the day will help you get much more from it.

What to bring to the Oaxaca Day of the Dead Marigold Fields Experience

Oaxaca generally has warm days and cooler evenings during this time of year. Rain is still possible too, so it helps to dress with comfort and practicality in mind.

  • Comfortable clothing
Jeans, long pants, dresses, or local textiles can all work well. Theme-appropriate outfits are fine as long as they are respectful and practical.
  • Comfortable shoes
You will be walking through fields and festival spaces, so practical footwear is recommended.
  • A light layer
Useful if the weather cools or if rain appears later in the day.
  • Cash in Mexican pesos
Helpful if you want to buy extra food, flowers, souvenirs, or pay for a taxi after the event.

Please note: There is no formal dress code. Dressing respectfully is appreciated, especially as you will be visiting local farming spaces and community celebrations. Day of the Dead face painting is not included, though some guests choose to arrange it separately before the event if they want that look for photos.

Ready to Book Your Place?

This is a single-day experience taking place on October 28, 2026.

Early-bird tickets are $135 USD until April 30, 2026. After that, regular tickets are $150 USD.

Because this event only happens once per year and Oaxaca fills very quickly for Day of the Dead, we strongly recommend reserving your place and your accommodation as early as possible.

Please note: Professional photos are delivered after the photographer finishes the full Muertos season workload. The usual turnaround is 3 to 4 weeks, and that timeline is accurate.

Need a place to stay for Day of the Dead in Oaxaca?

To make things easier, we’ve created an interactive map below to help you explore accommodation options in and around Oaxaca City during this sacred and celebrated time. The map is pre-set for the week of Day of the Dead, though you can adjust your travel dates and number of guests to suit your trip. It displays both hotels and short-term rentals so you can compare availability, location, and reviews at a glance. Weโ€™ve also pinned a central point that marks the meeting location for many of our group events. The closer you stay to this marker, the easier it will be to access our experiences and much of the activity in Centro Oaxaca.

Please note: accommodation fills up incredibly early for Day of the Dead. Hotels and home stays often begin selling out many months in advance, with prices rising sharply as the dates approach. Booking as far in advance as possible is highly recommended to avoid limited choices or higher rates. If accommodations near the pin are no longer available, staying a little farther out may still work well, especially for a quieter nightโ€™s rest.

Please double-check the currency displayed, as it may vary depending on your device settings or the website youโ€™re viewing.

Cancellation & Rebooking Policy

All tours, services, and experiences booked through WSE Travel are bound to our Terms and Conditions, which were modeled after most other travel services such as flights, hotels, and other tour operators.

At Where Sidewalks End, your reservation is more than a transaction. Itโ€™s a direct contract with local professionals who rely on this work as a primary source of income. As such, we are obligated to honor the livelihoods of our local partners, including guides, photographers, farmers, and drivers, who dedicate their time exclusively to your experience.

In many of the destinations where we operate, labor protections and fair wage commitments are upheld by local laws, and we are both ethically and contractually required to adhere to them. Once a booking is confirmed, the service providers committed to your experience are financially compensated for reserving their time, even in the event of cancellation. This ensures fair and dignified treatment for all involved in delivering your experience.

If You Need to Cancel or Reschedule

All bookings are subject to the following terms:

More than 14 Days’ Notice

Your payment will be placed into a Lifetime Deposit (Safety Deposit Box). This can be:

  • Used for a future date
  • Transferred to a friend or family member

Refunds are not available unless WSE Travel cancels your booking due to reasons beyond your control.

7โ€“14 Days’ Notice

A 50% rebooking fee will apply. This helps offset the compensation obligations to your dedicated team of local guides and service providers, who have reserved their day exclusively for your private tour and may not be able to secure alternate work with us or others on short notice.

Less than 7 Days’ Notice

The full cost of the tour is retained to pay the locals contracted in full. As this is a fixed-date group experience, your local teamโ€™s time is fully dedicated to your session. A new team will be hired for any future rebooking.

These policies are a compassionate extension of our official Terms & Conditions, designed to support both our guests and the ethical standards of responsible tourism.

Travel Insurance or Liability Waiver Required

Because life can be unpredictable, and because we are required to uphold our commitments to local partners, all guests must either:

  • Provide proof of comprehensive travel insurance, or
  • Sign a Liability Waiver Form at the start of their trip

We highly recommend SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, trusted by global travelers for its flexible, affordable coverage and very competitive rates.

Travel insurance can help protect you from financial losses related to:

  • Non-refundable bookings

If you choose to travel without Travel Insurance, you will be required to fill out a Liability Waiver Form at the beginning of your trip.
