La Punta – Puerto Escondido. A tiny beach town to relax in 2023

La Punta – Puerto Escondido

The heart of Puerto Escondido and Zicatela in Oaxaca can be great for partying, nice restaurants and fancy hotels. But just 10 mins away is La Punta, Puerto Escondido with a super relaxed hippy/backpacker like vibe.

Where is La Punta Beach?

Situated at the southernmost part of Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, you’ll find La Punta. This rocky area is home to a lighthouse and scattered residences, spanning a vast area. It is a favored spot among surfers worldwide, offering intermediate-level waves for those seeking a thrilling surfing experience.

For me this is the place to stay. Chill out in hammocks or under a hut by the beach in the peace and quiet. Then head into the main town of Puerto Escondido during the night to find a bit of atmosphere. It’ll only cost you 30-40 ($2) pesos in a taxi.

The point (La Punta).

The tiny beach town of La Punta, Puerto Escondido has a main dirt road, bit of a hippy vibe and surf that can get very big at the point. At times it isn’t ideal for swimming as the waves can get quite big, but good for a quick dip to freshen up.

Where to stay, La Punta.

I stayed at Cabanas Buena Onda (pics below) which I got recommended to my by a friend. Best to give them a call in advance on 954 582 1663 as they’re not on hostelworld.

Cabanas Buena Onda hostel in La Punta is the place you have to stay. They have dorms as well as cabanas. Walk just 50m and you’re in the water. Theres a cool hangout area under some huts to meet other travellers and has a great vibe. 1 minute walk to the shops and a couple restaurants. Dorms are just 120 pesos a night ($7).

If you can’t get in at Cabanas Buena Onda, I’d recommend to stay at Pacific Budda Hostel just across the road for 130 pesos a night and a 9.7 rating on hostelworld.

Or check out Hostelworld or booking.com for some chilled out places right on the beach.

They are hands down the number one place to start.
