La Guelaguetza, Oaxaca in 2023
With so much colour, culture, music and dancing, La Guelaguetza in Oaxaca is an incredible festival that you should see once in your lifetime. I absolutely loved it!!
Why is La Guelaguetza celebrated?
At its core, Guelaguetza honors the profound interdependence among individuals within the Oaxaca community. It magnifies the significance of sharing, reciprocity, and the extended community in indigenous cultures, serving as a vibrant celebration of these values.
People from all over Mexico and the world come to Oaxaca for this 2-week festival. Parties in the streets every day, the beautiful girls and colourful dresses from the 8 regions of Oaxaca come together to showcase their traditions. It’s amazing to think that each part of the state of Oaxaca has a totally different culture. That’s what makes Oaxaca so special.
For 2 Mondays in July, the main Guelaguetza event is up at the auditorium overlooking the city. An event in the morning, and one in the afternoon each Monday. But every day you will see dancing and festivities in the streets.
If you get the chance to sit up close, after every dance they throw out gifts and food from each region.
