Santa Maria del Tule, Oaxaca.
The biggest/fattest tree trunk in the world is right here in Oaxaca, Mexico. And yep, it’s bloody huge!! El Tule, ‘The Tree of life’ has a circumference for 42 meters. Wow!
The Arbol del Tule is situated in the town of Santa Maria del Tule, just 9km’s east of Oaxaca City and it’s worth the short trip just to go check it out.
How old is the Tule tree in Oaxaca?
Each month, numerous Mexican and foreign visitors flock to the village of Santa Maria del Tule to witness something truly unique in Mexico—the astonishing El Tule. This living tree, which has thrived for over 2,000 years, attracts awe and admiration from all who encounter it. It is a captivating destination that leaves a lasting impression on its visitors.
To get right up close, but not close enough to touch so they can protect it, they charge a 10 peso (50 cent) entrance fee that goes to help the preservation of the tree. Getting up close will give you the chance to see the figures, faces and legends that the tree holds.
Tule isn’t just well known in Oaxaca for this ridiculously huge tree trunk, they are also famous for their barbacoa. Slow cooked sheep or goat, served in big tacos that are super delicious. I recommend you try a couple in the market.
And while you’re there, try some of the traditional ice-cream of Oaxaca (nieves) that come in all sorts of flavors.
Santa Maria del Tule is a tiny town, so right beside the tree and church, you also have an small artesian market, and beside that market you have the food market. Where you’ll find all the traditional Oaxacan food.
How to get to El Tule
Being so close to Oaxaca City, it’s quite easy to get there. A taxi will cost you about 100 pesos ($5).
Or if you want to take the bus or collectivo (shared taxi) like I do, head one block past the Baseball stadium on the same side as the stadium. Both the buses and collectivos pass very regularly and cost $8 pesos or $11 pesos (50 cents).
Definitely worth a half day trip to see this beautiful little town.
