Photo Essay: Yi Peng – Thailand’s floating lanterns festival
The crowd all of a sudden burst out in cheer as the monks lit their torches near the front, and a cloud of smoke erupted.
Volunteers made their way around the grounds, ensuring that all the guests torches would be lit as well, so that the lanterns could be lit from them in unison.
Marianne and Ian beamed with excitement as we awaited our turn at the torch to light our lanterns.
The sky was already full of premature lanterns being lit by those too impatient to await the monks hail for us to all release them. Most of these were from outside the grounds.
Then the words were spoken by the head monk “You may now light your lanterns – but please wait to release them until we give the command.”
