Why We Created This Experience

We created this experience for travelers who want to connect with Muertos through something more immersive than a cemetery visit alone. The temazcal is not simply a sweat lodge. It is a sacred space of cleansing, renewal, and realignment that has been carried through generations in Mexico.

During the Day of the Dead season, that kind of ceremony can take on even more meaning. For some, it becomes a way to release heavy energy before or after more emotional Muertos experiences. For others, it is a chance to reflect, reset, and move forward with greater clarity during one of the most symbolically charged times of year in Oaxaca.

Our goal is for you to leave with more than a memory of heat and steam. We want you to come away with a fuller understanding of the temazcal as a living ancestral practice, and with a felt sense of renewal that stays with you after the ceremony ends.

What Makes This Experience Different

Many travelers hear about temazcales without ever understanding how meaningful they can be when approached with the right setting and guidance. This experience is different because it is offered as a once-a-year Muertos edition, shaped around a season when reflection, remembrance, and release already sit close to the surface.

It also takes place with multigenerational shamans in a quieter village setting outside Oaxaca City, rather than in a wellness-focused environment stripped of context. The ceremony remains rooted in local knowledge, ritual, heat, herbal steam, and the shared group process that makes a temazcal feel powerful in the first place.

The experience then slows down afterward with a meal by the lake, allowing time to rest, rehydrate, and reflect before returning to the city. That pacing matters. It gives the ceremony room to settle rather than ending abruptly.

What to Expect During the Day

This is a half-day group experience offered on November 3, following the main Day of the Dead dates in Oaxaca. We meet in Oaxaca City and travel together to a quieter village on the outskirts, where the temazcal ceremony takes place.

Once there, the shamans guide you through the preparation for the ceremony and explain how the experience will unfold. The temazcal itself is a dome-shaped sweat lodge that uses heated volcanic stones and herbal steam to create intense heat. Inside, chants, ritual guidance, and the rhythm of the group all shape the atmosphere of the ceremony.

This is not a passive experience. You enter the lodge, sit with the heat, breathe with the steam, and move through the ceremony in a way that can feel physically intense but deeply grounding. Many guests describe the process as both demanding and clarifying, especially during the Muertos season when questions of release, memory, and renewal can already feel close at hand.

After the ceremony, you step back into the open air, cool down, and gather for a shared meal beside a quiet lake. This part of the day is intentionally calmer. It offers time to breathe, rest, hydrate, and let the experience settle before heading back to Oaxaca.

By the end of the journey, the aim is not simply that you have tried a sweat lodge. It is that you have experienced an ancestral practice with context, respect, and enough space for reflection to make it meaningful.

Additional Preparation Information

Preparing well will help you get more from the ceremony and move through the heat more comfortably.

• Avoid alcohol the night before
  Drinking the evening prior can make the heat of the sweat lodge feel more intense and uncomfortable.
• Stay hydrated the day before
  Drink water consistently before the ceremony so your body is better prepared for the heat and steam.
• Drink water in the morning of the tour
  It is highly recommended to drink at least one liter of water before arriving.
• Bring clothing for both before and after
  You will change before entering the temazcal. Inside, wear a bathing suit or light shorts and a top, as these will get wet. Afterward, you will want dry, comfortable clothes for lunch and the return to Oaxaca.
• Bring a towel and a reusable water bottle
  You will want both after the ceremony.

Is this experience right for me?

This experience is best suited for travelers who are open to ancestral ritual, comfortable with physical heat, and interested in a more immersive Muertos experience beyond cemetery visits alone.

It is a strong fit for guests who appreciate reflection, ceremony, and slower, more embodied cultural experiences. It is less suited to travelers who are unsure about extended heat, enclosed spaces, or physically intense conditions.

If you are pregnant, have heart concerns, significant heat sensitivity, or struggle with claustrophobia, this may not be the right experience for you. If you are unsure, we strongly recommend speaking with a medical professional before booking.

What Can You Bring to the Muertos Temazcal Experience?

Taking part in a traditional temazcal ceremony means stepping into heat, steam, and sacred ritual. To ensure your comfort and full participation, we recommend bringing the following:

• Bathing suit or light shorts and top
  You will change before entering the temazcal. These clothes will get wet, so plan accordingly.
• Dry change of clothing
  After the ceremony you will want fresh, comfortable clothes for lunch and the return to Oaxaca.
• Towel
  Essential for drying off after the sweat lodge.
• Reusable water bottle
  Staying hydrated is very important before and after the ceremony.
• Weather-appropriate outerwear
  The experience includes time outdoors by the lake. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal, but a light layer may be useful depending on the weather.
• Sandals or comfortable slip-on shoes
  You will remove footwear before entering the sweat lodge, so easy-to-remove shoes work best.
• Cash for extras
  If you would like to leave a tip for the shamans or purchase something along the way, small bills in pesos are recommended.

Please note: There is no formal dress code. Comfort and practicality matter most. You will change into a bathing suit or light clothes for the ceremony and will want dry, comfortable clothing afterward. Dressing respectfully is always appreciated, as this is a sacred ancestral tradition.

  This is a half-day experience and does not include lodging.
• Additional beverages
  Water and the included meal are covered, but other drinks outside of lunch are not.
• Gratuities
  Tips for the shamans, guide, or driver are not included.
• Personal spending money
  Bring cash if you would like to leave a larger tip or purchase something along the way.

This experience takes place on a single day each year, on November 3, immediately following the main Day of the Dead dates in Oaxaca.

Space is intentionally limited in order to keep the group small enough for the ceremony to feel respectful and manageable. If the minimum group size of four participants is not met, a full refund will be provided with 24 hours notice. Otherwise, cancellations follow WSE Travel’s standard policy listed below.

All tours, services, and experiences booked through WSE Travel are bound to our Terms and Conditions, which were modeled after most other travel services, such as flights, hotels, and other tour operators.

As such, we are obligated to honor the livelihoods of our local partners, including guides, Ajarns (masters), shamans, and drivers, who dedicate their time exclusively to your experience.

In many of the destinations where we operate, labor protections and fair wage commitments are upheld by local laws, and we are both ethically and contractually required to adhere to them. Once a booking is confirmed, the service providers committed to your experience are financially compensated for reserving their time, even in the event of cancellation. This ensures fair and dignified treatment for all involved in delivering your experience.

If You Need to Cancel or Reschedule

All bookings are subject to the following terms:

More than 14 Days’ Notice

Your payment will be placed into a Lifetime Deposit (Safety Deposit Box). This can be:

• Used for a future date
• Transferred to a friend or family member

Refunds are not available unless WSE Travel cancels your booking due to reasons beyond your control.

7–14 Days’ Notice

A 50% rebooking fee will apply. This helps offset the compensation obligations to your dedicated team of local guides and service providers, who have reserved their day exclusively for your private tour and may not be able to secure alternate work with us or others on short notice.

Less than 7 Days’ Notice

The full cost of the tour is retained to pay the locals contracted in full. As this is a fixed-date group experience, your local team’s time is fully dedicated to your session. A new team will be hired for any future rebooking.

Travel Insurance or Liability Waiver Required

Because life can be unpredictable, and because we are required to uphold our commitments to local partners, all guests must either:

• Provide proof of comprehensive travel insurance, or
• Sign a Liability Waiver Form at the start of their trip
