Why We Created This Experience

Carnaval in Santa Catarina Minas is not a spectacle created for visitors. It is a living community tradition that marks renewal, satire, and shared identity. Mezcal, music, paint, and ritual come together as neighbors gather to celebrate the closing of a seasonal cycle.

We created this experience for travelers who want to understand Carnaval with context and care, rather than simply arrive for the loudest moment and miss the meaning behind it. In Minas, mezcal and celebration are deeply connected, and the community’s identity is woven through both.

Our goal is for you to leave with more than exciting memories of paint, music, fireworks, and movement. We want you to come away with a deeper understanding of why Carnaval matters here, how it connects to mezcal tradition, and what it means to witness a real community celebration from within.

What Makes This Experience Different

Many festival experiences are designed around visitors. This one is not. Santa Catarina Minas celebrates Carnaval for itself, and that changes the tone of the day entirely. What you are stepping into is a living local tradition with its own rhythm, symbolism, and emotional weight.

We also begin with context, not chaos. Starting at a family-run palenque helps guests understand why mezcal matters in Minas and how it connects to the wider celebration before the energy in the plaza begins to build.

Because the group is intentionally kept small, the experience stays more respectful and easier to navigate. That smaller size makes it possible to move with more care, ask questions, and engage more meaningfully with what is unfolding around you.

What to Expect During the Day

This is a full-day, small-group cultural immersion that takes place on a single day each year: Martes de Carnaval, February 9, 2027.

Your experience begins in Oaxaca Centro, where we depart the city and travel into the countryside toward Santa Catarina Minas, a village known for its ancestral clay pot mezcal production. Minas is not only a mezcal-producing community, but a town whose celebrations, history, and identity are closely tied to the land and the craft.

Before entering the Carnaval festivities, we visit a family-run palenque to understand what makes this village unique. As you walk through the roasting pit, fermentation vats, and traditional clay stills, your host will share how mezcal is woven into daily life and community traditions, including the role it plays during Carnaval. Guided tastings and traditional bites ground the afternoon in context, offering insight into why this celebration unfolds the way it does in Minas.

Before stepping into the festivities, we also explore the meaning behind Minas’ ancestral Carnaval. This is not simply a party, but a communal ritual marking renewal, satire, and the closing of a seasonal cycle. You’ll gain insight into the symbolism of painted bodies, masked figures, music, and the playful yet powerful inversion of social roles that defines the celebration.

As the plaza fills with music and movement, you’ll accompany the community through an evening of shared celebration. Bands circulate through the streets, painted participants gather in groups, fireworks light the sky, and neighbors welcome one another into the spirit of the occasion. Rather than observing from the sidelines, you’ll experience Carnaval from within, respectfully and alongside the people who keep this tradition alive.

During the festivities, we pause to enjoy local street food prepared for the celebration. These simple, satisfying dishes are part of the atmosphere and a reminder that Carnaval is as much about gathering and sharing as it is about ritual. Eating what locals eat that night becomes part of the immersion.

What should you bring to the Oaxaca Carnaval Experience?

This experience unfolds outdoors and transitions from warm afternoon temperatures to a cooler evening celebration. Carnaval in Santa Catarina Minas is energetic and immersive, so coming prepared will help you enjoy it fully.

• Clothing you don’t mind getting stained – Paint is part of the Carnaval tradition in Minas. While participation is respectful, paint can end up on clothing. Wear items you are comfortable getting marked.
• Layered clothing – Days can be hot under the sun, but evenings become noticeably cooler. A light windbreaker or jacket is strongly recommended, and long pants are helpful once temperatures drop after sunset.
• Comfortable closed-toe shoes – Streets may be uneven, and the plaza can become crowded. Choose shoes suitable for walking and standing for extended periods.
• Sun protection – A hat and sunscreen are useful during the afternoon portion of the experience.
• A small reusable water bottle – Staying hydrated is important, especially before mezcal tastings and during the festivities.

Please note: There is no formal dress code, but comfort is essential. You will spend the afternoon outdoors and the evening in an active community celebration. Wear practical clothing you do not mind getting stained with paint, and bring a light layer for the cooler evening temperatures. Dressing respectfully is appreciated, as you will be engaging with local families and participating in a living community tradition.

All tours, services, and experiences booked through WSE Travel are bound to our Terms and Conditions, which were modeled after most other travel services such as flights, hotels, and other tour operators.

As such, we are obligated to honor the livelihoods of our local partners, including guides, Ajarns (masters), and drivers, who dedicate their time exclusively to your experience.

In many of the destinations where we operate, labor protections and fair wage commitments are upheld by local laws, and we are both ethically and contractually required to adhere to them. Once a booking is confirmed, the service providers committed to your experience are financially compensated for reserving their time, even in the event of cancellation. This ensures fair and dignified treatment for all involved in delivering your experience.

More than 14 Days’ Notice

Your payment will be placed into a Lifetime Deposit (Safety Deposit Box). This can be:

• Used for a future date
• Transferred to a friend or family member

Because this experience takes place on a fixed annual date, rescheduling options are limited to future Carnaval editions only.

Refunds are not available unless WSE Travel cancels your booking due to reasons beyond your control.

7–14 Days’ Notice

A 50% rebooking fee will apply. This helps offset the compensation obligations to your dedicated team of local guides and service providers, who have reserved their day exclusively for your private tour and may not be able to secure alternate work with us or others on short notice.

Less than 7 Days’ Notice

The full cost of the tour is retained to pay the locals contracted in full. As this is a private experience, your local team’s time is fully dedicated to your session. A new team will be hired for any future rebooking.
