Stay deep in the Borneo rainforest with an Iban community and experience what village life actually feels like.

This is the most complete version of our Iban longhouse journey. It is the option for travelers who want more than a quick visit, more than a scenic hike, and more than a one-night cultural stop. Over five days, there is enough time to settle into the rhythm of the village, share more space with the community, and take part in more of the routines that shape everyday life there.

Because this version includes the possibility of camping, waterfall trekking, and additional village-based activities such as farm visits, basket weaving, or helping prepare meals, it offers the deepest level of integration we can realistically provide. Nothing is staged. Nothing is performed on demand. The value of this trip is in joining the villagers as they go about real jungle life, and being welcomed into that world as respectfully as possible.

Why We Created This 5-Day Experience

The 5-day version exists for guests who want the fullest possible experience of life around the longhouse. The shorter versions are still meaningful, but this one gives the community more time to open up, and it gives you more time to adjust to the environment, the pace, the food, the terrain, and the people around you.

It also gives enough time for the experience to stay flexible. In a place like this, the best moments often come from going with the flow of village life rather than following a rigid sightseeing checklist. The longer format makes that possible.

Just as importantly, this tourism supports the whole village, not only one household. The income contributes to community upkeep, practical repairs, and materials the village needs to sustain itself over time. When there are problems such as termite damage or other maintenance needs, these visits can make a real difference.

How booking works

This experience runs on a request basis. Because we need to check directly with the family and community before confirming a reservation, your requested dates are not auto-confirmed at checkout.

Once you send your request, we check with the family first. No payment is made until availability has been confirmed. If the family can host your group, we will reply, send the invoice, and then follow up with your welcome email and the practical details we need from you, such as your Kuching hotel for pick-up.

This is the best way to keep the experience respectful and realistic, since the village is a living community and not a hotel that simply opens inventory on demand.

What makes the 5-day version special?

This is the only version that gives enough time to realistically combine the full longhouse experience with camping, waterfall trekking, and additional village activities. That does not mean every moment is fixed in advance. It means the stay has enough space in it for the trip to feel more natural and more complete.

Some days, the village may be focused on farm work. Some days, the women may be weaving or preparing food. Some days, the weather may push the group toward one activity over another. That flexibility is part of the point. The experience becomes stronger when it responds to what is genuinely happening around you.

Unlike the 3-day option, this version can include both the camping segment and the waterfall trek, alongside slower village time. That is what makes it the ultimate version for travelers who really want to understand what it feels like to live there, even briefly.

How the journey generally unfolds

Your first day begins early in Kuching. There is a long drive into the interior, followed by a shorter series of transfers before the jungle trek begins. Bags are sent separately by 4×4 to the village, while you carry only what you need for the hike itself. The final approach is a demanding 4 to 5-hour jungle trek through narrow trails, farms, and river crossings before arriving at the longhouse in time for dinner and your first night in the village.

From there, the 5-day version opens up. Depending on the weather, group energy, and village rhythm, the stay may include the camping segment, the waterfall trek, and additional community-based activities. Rather than forcing every day into a rigid order, this version allows the experience to move more organically with what is happening around you.

On the final day, you trek back down the mountain and return by road to Kuching, stopping for a late lunch along the way. Travel time can vary a lot, so we strongly recommend having a hotel booked in Kuching that night and not planning a same-day departure flight unless it is very late and you fully understand the risk.

The camping segment

This version can include the camping option. After breakfast in the village, the group may depart on an additional trek of around 2.5 hours to reach the campsite. Guides and porters handle the main camp setup, and once settled, there may be time for river-based activities and gathering jungle ingredients for food.

Night fishing and hunting with villagers can also be possible. This is real jungle life, not a demonstration. It is honest, raw, and not for everyone. Guests who do not feel comfortable joining are absolutely fine to stay at camp instead. No one is pressured to participate in anything beyond their comfort zone.

Military hammocks and blankets are provided. The next morning, breakfast is served at camp before the group dismantles the site and treks back toward the village. Vegetarian options can be arranged, but they must be requested in advance so the family can prepare appropriately.

The waterfall segment

The waterfall trek is another part that can fit into the 5-day version. It usually takes around 1.5 hours each way, with a descent through the jungle toward flowing river water, followed by an uphill return to the longhouse later in the day.

It is one of the most rewarding natural moments of the trip. The waterfall itself feels very remote, with the kind of quiet that is becoming rare in most parts of the world. Lunch can be packed for the outing, and the slower pace there offers a very different type of connection than the harder trekking days.

Village life between the bigger activities

One of the biggest strengths of the 5-day format is that it leaves room for unforced village life. In the afternoons, or on days without a major trek, it may be possible to join villagers at their farms, help collect peppercorns, assist with dinner preparation, or spend time with the women learning traditional basket weaving.

These are not guaranteed performances for visitors. They are opportunities to join people in what they are already doing. Guests can opt in or out, or simply spend time talking, resting, reading, or enjoying a rare break from digital life.

What village conditions are really like

This is not a jungle villa or a rainforest resort. You will be staying in the homes of villagers, on a shared-room basis, sleeping on mattresses on the floor. The facilities are simple and reflect local daily life, not a polished tourism product.

Showers are basic, using cold water and a bucket. Toilets are squat-style. Conditions are rugged, but they are also comfortable in their own honest way, especially once you have been trekking in the jungle heat. Those cold showers can feel incredible after a long day on the trails.

Guests who come in expecting raw, real village life tend to love this trip. Guests expecting a luxury jungle stay usually do not.

Is this experience right for me?

This trip is best for travelers who want real immersion, do not mind physical challenge, and value access to a living community more than comfort, speed, or polished logistics.

It is a strong fit for people who want to disconnect, adapt to local rhythms, and share space with a community in a respectful way. It is less suited to guests looking for a resort-style jungle break, rigidly structured sightseeing, or low-effort cultural experiences.

If you are not comfortable with long jungle hikes, wet trails, basic conditions, cold showers, shared sleeping spaces, or the unpredictability of real rural life, this is probably not the right trip for you. If those are the very things that appeal to you, this could be one of the most memorable experiences in Borneo.

What to bring

The right packing list makes a big difference on this trip. You will be trekking in heat, crossing rivers, sleeping simply, and living with limited facilities for several days.

• Raincoat or umbrella
  Weather can shift quickly.
• High socks
  Very useful in rainy conditions when leeches come out. They are mostly harmless, but definitely annoying.

All tours, services, and experiences booked through WSE Travel are bound to our Terms and Conditions, which were modeled after most other travel services, such as flights, hotels, and other tour operators.

Once a booking is confirmed, the service providers committed to your experience are financially compensated for reserving their time, even in the event of cancellation. If You Need to Cancel or Reschedule

All bookings are subject to the following terms:

More than 14 Days’ Notice

Your payment will be placed into a Lifetime Deposit (Safety Deposit Box). This can be:

• Used for a future date
• Transferred to a friend or family member

Refunds are not available unless WSE Travel cancels your booking due to reasons beyond your control.

7 to 14 Days’ Notice

A 50% rebooking fee will apply. This helps offset the compensation obligations to your dedicated team of local guides and service providers, who have reserved their time exclusively for your private trip and may not be able to secure alternate work on short notice.

Less than 7 Days’ Notice

The full cost of the tour is retained to pay the locals contracted in full. As this is a private experience, your local team’s time is fully dedicated to your trip. A new team will be hired for any future rebooking.

Travel Insurance or Liability Waiver Required

Because life can be unpredictable, and because we are required to uphold our commitments to local partners, all guests must either:
